Sustainable hybrid coating for the preservation of street artProtecting street art murals from photo-oxidative, thermal and hydrothermal degradation can be difficult depending on the location and substrate. This article describes the development and characterization of the chitosan-nanosilica hybrid coating.

Street art murals are spreading worldwide and transforming urban areas; however, there is a lack of suitable and effective conservation methods for this emerging art form. Exterior paints consist of inorganic pigments or dyes mixed with synthetic organic binders applied to inorganic substrates, mainly concrete, and are subject to severe degradation from light, temperature and humidity fluctuations, pollutants and biological agents that reduce their preservation.

Focus of the research

This research focuses on the formulation and application of chitosan and nanosilica hybrid coatings utilizing the good film forming ability, optical and antimicrobial properties and durability of chitosan. The ability of silica to improve the properties of chitosan films was investigated, with particular focus on the compatibility of hybrid films with paint and concrete substrates. The new formulation was characterized by ATR-FTIR, SEM imaging, DLS and zeta potential measurements. The hybrid coating was applied to models using spray-painted concrete paint and the film properties in terms of adhesion, water vapor permeability and hydrophobicity are reported. The long-term stability of the coating was assessed by three different accelerated aging tests and the color variations were measured.
